In previous lessons we have learned about climate change and now understand that the temperatures around the world are increasing. This rise in global temperature is called Global Warming. We can see from the graph below that since the late 1800's the average temperature around the world has risen by almost 1°C. While this does not seem like a large number we will see that it is already having big effects on the worlds climate and ecosystems. Global warming is occurring due to a rise in carbon dioxide and other 'greenhouse gases' in the atmosphere. This has happened as a result of human activities since the industrial revolution such as the burning of fossil fuel and deforestation. In the next lesson we will learn about how something called the 'greenhouse effect' which will explain why the world's temperature rises when more gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into our atmosphere.
