In early 2009 Community Forests International and Community Forests Pemba sought to install an environmental message into their programming in order to foster a lasting commitment to sustainable development. Based on past success from
an Islamic Ethics environmental program Community Forests Pemba began teaching schools and communities about the importance of forest stewardship while exploring the effects of climate change on local ecosystems.
By using the latest Web 2.0 technology, the organization developed this online learning portal, the Global Schools Link, to allow students from around the world to explore environmental education from their region while sharing their experiences with other like-minded youth around the world. Since its inception in late 2007 the Global Schools Link has continued to expand in the scope of its curriculum and school participation.
Global warming and climate change can seem like insurmountable challenges, but local student-led conservation efforts connected with an
international network of similar initiatives can build the relationships necessary to effect change on a global scale. Through the Global Schools Link students are able to connect and share both challenges and sucesses of greening a better world for tomorrow.
Global Schools Link unites schools from around the world with the goal of creating a cross-cultural, environmental learning experience. Students participating in this innovative learning partnership address climate change by investigating the causes and effects of Greenhouse Gas Emissions on a personal and global level and off-setting their environmental impact by planting trees and educating their fellow students.
Through curriculum integrated learning activities, including the management of on-site tree nurseries and the planting of indigenous seedlings, these schools use the Internet to build an interactive network. Through this network participating students create an avenue to share and learn from each other's unique challenges, progress and perspectives.
Presently, each participating school plants trees on school grounds and explores curriculum related activities that link directly to concurring programming in their partner schools. Students log onto the Global Schools
Link and create online profiles to share their own interests and message other students directly through electronic forums. Environmental activities are posted on class blogs while students and teachers explore their environment through an international lens. Climate related activities such as carbon calculation and offset project, soil sampling and forest monitoring initiatives are shared through a multimedia portal connecting students around the world in one united effort against global warming.
